Our Horses Here at NCS

Daisy - 25 years
Daisy is our sweet little Pony of America. She came here almost 20 years ago with her late sister Sugar. The two were inseparable up to the moment when Sugar passed away. She is best friends with her old buddy Omar, and continues to be one of the main pillars in our lesson program.

Over the years, she has taught so many kids how to ride, and continues to be a favorite among our current young riders.

Norman - 22 years
Norman is our old gentle giant, also a Spanish Norman. He has served many years building the confidence of small riders, as they moved from pony to large horse. He is so careful with young kids, and is one of the safest horses to ride. It is many riders opinion that he has one of the most comfortable canters in the entire barn.

His favorite pal is his younger brother Mack, and the two usually spend their days together out in the paddock, wreaking havoc wherever they can.

Jawa - 18 years

Jawa is one of our most stunning horses, and she is a Dutch Warmblood. She is also one of our most accomplished horses, as she has competed at Spruce Meadows with one of our teenage riders. She is a competitive jumping horse, and can put the rest of our horses to shame in a jumping competition. She can clear five feet with ease!

Her daughter Opel is her best friend, and they spend almost every waking moment together, playing around in the paddocks. She also loves to spend time with her long-time buddy Spring.

Thyme - 17 years
Thyme has one of the most cuddliest personalities at the barn. She is an in-your-pocket kind of horse, and is always waiting for someone to come visit her. She and her late sister Summer were brought up as a driving Tennessee Walker pair, and they pulled the racing wagon, and always provided and entertaining drive.

Now Thyme is ridden by the students, and with her unique gait, she is one of our most entertaining rides!

Blackie and Lacrete
These two are our sweet little miniature horses. Blackie is the mother of Lacrete, and they are always seen side by side as they spend their days in the paddock. They love to be groomed by the kids, and both are trained to ride and drive. These days though, Lacrete has taken over the roll as the miniature we use, because his mother is enjoying her wonderful days of retirement in her old age.

Czar - 17 years
Czar is a Friesian - Quarter horse we had for many years, but then he became a boarder horse as he was sold to his new owner here in Yellowknife. He has the most personality of any of the horses at the stable, and will stretch his neck out comically in order to reach you to nose for treats. His lip is always moving, trying to navigate your pocket zippers trying to find the carrots he's sure you have in your pockets.

He is such a beautiful horse, and his striking black coat makes everyone stare in awe when he plays outside in the paddock. With his head held high, he loves the attention and will show off for everyone.

Omar - 23 years
Omar is our old trusty Icelandic horse. He's our best kids horse, and just loves to be brushed and ridden by the young riders. He's been here a long time, and is a treasured member of our herd here at NCS.

There is no better horse to ride bareback on, our to take kids out on the trails or to the sand pits. His best friend is Daisy, and he is the boss horse of the barn.

Mack - 21 years
Mack, a Spanish Norman, is one of our top school horses. He builds the confidence of everyone who rides him, and continues to teach students how to handle larger horses. Over the years, he has taught countless students how to ride at a more advanced level, especially in the jumping ring.

Mack spends his days hanging out with his older brother Norman, and the two are nearly inseparable. Together they used to pull the carriages during weddings or parades.

Spring - 15 years
Spring is our tallest horse in the stables. She is a Warmblood, and is one of the sweetest horses we have. Loaded with personality, she'll be sure to put a smile on your face. We use her as a school horse, because despite her intimidating stature, she truly is a dream to ride and handle. Safe enough for beginners, yet can still challenge the most experienced of riders, she is a very well rounded horse.

She is the boss mare of the herd, and loves to spend her days with her best friends Jawa and Opel.

Opel - 6 years
Opel is our barn baby. She was born up in the north, daughter of the famous Hickstead! Currently, she is being trained to ride, and will hopefully one day be in the show ring like her parents. There is no doubt that she is one of the most beautiful horses at our barn.

She has a sweet personality, and just loves to play with people. She'll be sure to make you laugh with her goofy ways!

Leon - 19 years
Leon is our quirkiest horse. He is some type of Warmblood mix, and came up north several years ago. He is only for the most experienced riders, as he is quite fast and loves to run. On the ground though, he has such a sweet personality, and will follow anybody around like a little puppy.

It is impossible not to fall in love with his adorable expression as he trails behind you when you visit him.

Robbie and Mitch
Robbie and Mitch are our two adorable little donkeys. They love to be groomed by the kids, and are always sticking their noses into your pockets on the hunt for treats. It is the students' favorite thing to put them in the arena and run them around, letting the two of them play. If the students are brave, we even let them try to ride both of them, as neither are trained to ride, but the kids love to hang on as they frolic around.

Cimarron - 9 years
Cimarron is our Friesian stallion, and by far the most gorgeous animal at the barn. He's got the thickest mane and tail you've ever seen, and he loves to show off his beauty with his high stepping action.

Our older riders use him, and he always offers a wonderful ride. He has the most graceful trot, and his canter is a showstopper with his beautiful feathers flashing around his ankles.
